Having followed Reneé Rapp since 2018 and attending her debut London show last year, I snapped up tickets for her London residency in an instant and waited with extreme levels of excitement to see her perform again. It's funny having watched someone for so long, you feel a strange sense of pride without even knowing them personally. Perhaps with Reneé it's even stronger because of her connection to us fans that makes her feel almost like a friend, even on the other side of the Atlantic. So, going into the weekend I knew it was going to be special, but it turned out to be so much more than that.

From her breakout role as Regina George in Mean Girls on Broadway and then the recent film adaptation, to her portrayal of Leighton in the charmingly relevant The Sex Lives of College Girls series, to her acclaimed debut album, Rapp has grown from strength to strength, gaining an adoring fanbase along the way, and always staying true to her values of honesty and integrity. Last year her first full length album was released to much critical acclaim (snubbed by the Grammy's, but we move) and this tour was a testament to her evolution as an artist, and a celebration of her impressive musical intuition and writing skills. I won't go into depth because we'd be here forever but for me it's a no skip album that perfectly blends elements of pop, rock, and theatre to create a spellbinding journey. Lyrically it hits hard and musically it offers variety and so much melodic interest whilst still retaining a very Reneé feel.

Watching last year's concert, with music from Rapp's EP 'Everything to Everyone' it was hard to imagine it could get better but with time, it seems Renee has grown in confidence and truly proves to be born for the stage. Two of the shows I saw (Hammersmith Apollo and Camden Roundhouse) were part of the Snow Hard Feelings Tour, which included a mixture of songs from both releases. During these full production concerts, Rapp commanded attention with her dynamic vocals and infectious energy, delivering unforgettable performances, supported by her brilliant band and excellent lighting and video design. 

But it was Rapp's acoustic performance at Banquet Records that truly showcased her vocal prowess and artistry. Stripped of elaborate production, Rapp delivered soul-stirring renditions of her songs, allowing her powerhouse vocals to take centre stage. With each note, she demonstrated remarkable control and nuance, effortlessly navigating through intricate melodies and emotive lyrics. Her performance was a masterclass in vocal performance, with faultless transitions between delicate falsetto and powerful belting.


I've always been in awe of Reneé's vocal technique, from her rounded vowels, to her impeccable breath control, phrasing and healthy belt, so getting a chance to witness it close up felt really special. Vocally she shone in all three shows, but there's really something magical about an acoustic show, with only a few hundred people all living in the moment and experiencing someone's innate talent. This show's version of 'Snow Angel' will go down as one of my favourite live vocals I've ever heard. 

Throughout the shows, Rapp's authenticity and vulnerability were palpable. Whether sharing personal stories or engaging in playful banter with the crowd, she created an intimate connection that made everyone feel like old friends. Despite the occasional interruptions caused by fainting fans, Rapp handled each moment with grace and humour, turning potential disruptions into endearing anecdotes. Plus, her ability to convey emotion through her vocals and infuse each lyric with depth and sincerity, creates an intimate connection with her audience. Part comedy show, part concert, you're sure to be laughing out loud and probably crying during a Reneé Rapp concert.

Music is such a community former, and these shows were testament to that. From standing in the queues to waiting in the venue for the concert to start, I got chatting to so many people and felt like I was in a room of likeminded people who just wanted to have a good time. The ethos of acceptance and friendship which Reneé fosters, trickles down to her fans, allowing the creation of a brilliantly welcoming environment. There are also a number of excellent audience chants which when screamed out, really unite the crowd, and I must say, as a Brit I feel like we really excel at these, thanks to our years of assemblies and pantomimes. The signs held up by fans added to the sense of community, but unfortunately there were many which veered into objectification. Sign culture and boundaries is a whole topic of it's own but Reneé navigated these situations with poise, reminding fans of the importance of respect; let's just hope people chill out for her next performances.


The support acts, Towa Bird and Sekou, brought their own energy to the stage, setting the perfect tone for Rapp's captivating performances. Towa Bird, with their soulful melodies and infectious energy, warmed up the crowd with their genre-bending sound, seamlessly blending elements of indie-pop and R&B. Their dynamic performance left a lasting impression, showcasing their undeniable charisma and artistry. Meanwhile, Sekou captivated audiences with his powerful vocals and heartfelt lyrics, delivering an electrifying performance. At only 19 years old, he's sure to go from strength to strength and I can't wait to see him flourish in the music industry.

As the final notes of 'Snow Angel' echoed through the venues and confetti rained down, it was clear that Rapp's London shows had left an indelible mark on all who were lucky enough to witness them. With her unparalleled talent, genuine connection to her fans, and unwavering authenticity, Reneé Rapp has proven once again why she is a force to be reckoned with. And as London basks in the afterglow of her triumphant performances, one thing is certain: the star of Reneé Rapp is only just beginning to rise. Bring on the Reneésance.

Initial Casting Announced for Spring Awakening Reunion Concert


Producers Jack Maple and Evelyn Hoskins are thrilled to unveil the initial cast for the 15th Anniversary concert of the groundbreaking West End production of Spring Awakening, the acclaimed musical by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, based on Frank Wedekind’s iconic play.

This special event, marking the 15th year since the original London production, will reunite many of the beloved original cast members for a one-night-only celebration on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the Victoria Palace Theatre. Tickets are available for purchase now.

Returning to the stage from the original West End production are Lucy May Barker as Ilse, Natasha Barnes as Anna, Harry McEntire as Ernst, Hayley Gallivan as Martha, Evelyn Hoskins as Thea, Edward Judge as Otto, Jamie Muscato as Melchior, Jos Slovick as Georg, and Charlotte Wakefield as Wendla. Additionally, Chris Barton, Natalie Garner, Mona Goodwin, Gemma O’Duffy, and Richard Southgate will reprise their roles.

The original London band, including Huw Davies, Don Richardson, Matthew Senior, Vicky Matthews, Charlie Brown, and Rachel Robson under the musical direction of Nigel Lilley, will accompany the cast.

Spring Awakening chronicles the tale of adolescent rebellion against societal constraints, set to a captivating score that has enthralled audiences worldwide.

Originally premiering on Broadway in 2006 and subsequently transferring to London in 2009, Spring Awakening has garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards, including Tony and Olivier accolades.

Duncan Sheik expressed his excitement about the anniversary concert, reminiscing about the joyous memories of the original London production. Steven Sater shared his gratitude for the opportunity to bring back the beloved show for this special occasion.

In addition to celebrating the musical's legacy, this concert will serve as a fundraiser for Imogen Kinchin, a pivotal figure in the original production, who is battling Stage IV Bowel Cancer. The company of Spring Awakening has generously decided to donate the proceeds from the concert to Imogen's Fund.

Directed by Jamie Armitage and featuring musical direction by Nigel Lilley, Spring Awakening promises to be a poignant and unforgettable event, honouring both the musical's impact and the resilience of its community.

Here & Now a Musical by Steps to Debut This Year


UK pop sensation Steps is over the moon to reveal the world premiere of their fresh musical, Here & Now. Set to the beats of their iconic music and featuring an original storyline by Shaun Kitchener, the musical will debut at The Alexandra, Birmingham, running from November 9 to 24, 2024. Produced by Steps and ROYO with Pete Waterman, directed by Rachel Kavanaugh, and choreographed by Olivier Award winner Matt Cole, Here & Now promises a spectacular showcase of Steps' timeless hits.

Casting details are yet to be unveiled, but here's a sneak peek into the musical's plot: Step into the lively aisles of seaside superstore Better Best Bargains on a Friday night, where the atmosphere is electric, and everyone's dancing. However, when Caz discovers that the shelves are filled with deceit, the anticipated Summer of Love turns into a heartbreaking tale. Will they miss their shot at 'happy ever after,' or does love have another twist in store?

Steps members (Claire Richards, Faye Tozer, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Lee Latchford-Evans, and Lisa Scott-Lee) expressed their excitement about the musical, sharing, “We’ve searched for the perfect story for our music, and we’ve found it in the aisle of a seaside superstore. It’s a story of friendship, romance, and community, packed with our biggest hits. We can’t wait to see you there!”

With 14 top five singles, 4 number one albums, 22 million record sales, 500 million streams, and 11 sold-out national arena tours, Steps is the UK’s most successful mixed-sex pop group. Their chart-toppers like Tragedy/Heartbeat, Stomp, One For Sorrow, Better Best Forgotten, 5,6,7,8, Last Thing On My Mind, Love’s Got A Hold Of My Heart, and Chain Reaction will be featured in the musical.

Sammy Rae and the Friends at the Hammersmith Apollo Review: A Theatrical, Musical Masterclass

Sammy Rae and the Friends took over the Eventim Apollo last night for the London stop on their Camp Tour and what a glorious night it was. Under the magnetic leadership of vocalist and songwriter Samantha Rae Bowers, the Brooklyn-based septet dazzled the audience with impeccable vocals, riffs and infectious enthusiasm. Their unique blend of jazz, funk and folk with a dash of theatre kid for good measure created an electrically warm atmosphere and made the venue feel like it was hosting one big party.

From the get go it's Sammy's utterly magnetic presence which draws you in. Her infectious energy creates an almost instantaneous connection with the audience that continues throughout and provides the ingredients for a really special night. Whether belting out stellar vocals (that sound just as good if not better than on the albums), laying on the stage or bantering with the audience, Sammy Rae proves to be an outstandingly charismatic band leader, who knows how to command a stage.

The Friends, the ridiculously talented ensemble of musicians who accompany the show are as good as it gets. They each get moments to shine and showcase their musical skills which are universally outstanding, and alongside that they get to show their chemistry with one another. The whole group seem to be having the time of their lives on stage, creating a bubbling vibe which reaches into the audience and pulls us into the fold. Positivity is the heartbeat of this group and it's joyous to behold.

The setlist provided a great mix of familiar favourites including Talk it Up and Jackie Onassis as well as some sneak peeks at tracks from their upcoming album. Particularly moving was the soon to be released David, which focusses on men's mental health and is incredibly beautiful and poignant. There were also a couple of covers, with Abba's Lay All Your Love on Me proving a real audience favourite. Throughout, Sammy Rae and Friends effortlessly transitioned between vocal styles and genres, going from calmer more soulful pieces to the exuberant high-octane numbers. The diverse repertoire continually showcased the band's musical aptitude and versatility.

Alongside expert musicianship, the evening was truly a celebration of community, as fostered by the group and the infectious, frivolous atmosphere they crafted. Whilst the songs explore a lot of serious themes, the group maintain a carefree persona and invite the audience to enjoy the moment and celebrate the good things life has to offer.

The Camp tour isn't anchored around a specific album so the evening was a great chance to revel in the signature hits, whilst becoming excited for what's next in the Sammy Rae discography. The combination of Sammy Rae's magnetic stage presence, the exceptional talent of the Friends, a thoughtfully curated setlist and a welcoming crowd, affirmed the group as a formidable force in the music industry and made a promise that we'll be seeing and hearing much more of them. They certainly earned their badges for riffing, raving and raising the roof!

Pink at BST Hyde Park review: An Electrifying Performance Which Soars to New Heights

In a stunning showcase of talent and entertainment, last night Pink took to the Great Oak Stage at Hyde Park, to perform a captivating show which closed her weekend at the BST festival. An awe-inspiring experience, her limitless energy, exceptional connection with the crowd, astonishing circus abilities, and unwavering vocals took the spotlight and created a really really entertaining evening. Although there were a few moments of slight lulls, the other exhilarating moments more than made up for them, resulting in a truly unforgettable evening of pure enjoyment.

Pink's natural ability to engage with her audience was truly extraordinary. From the moment she stepped onto the stage, she effortlessly commanded everyone's attention with her charming presence. She skilfully interacted with the crowd throughout the concert, making each person feel like an integral part of the performance. From taking various teddy bears, to celebrating first concert experiences and showcasing a fan's artwork, her interactions were authentic and heartfelt, creating a really welcoming atmosphere and some truly memorable audience experiences.

It's not a Pink show without some gravity defying circus acts and even at the vast open air venue she did not disappoint. Whether she was soaring high above the stage showing aerial silks or executing some beautiful choreography whilst suspended in the air, her talent left spectators in awe. These mesmerising moments added a dynamic element to the show, that truly showcased Pink's versatility and fearlessness as an artist, cementing her as one of the best in the business.

Pink's vocals remained flawless throughout the entire evening, delivering powerful performances filled with precision and emotion. Her voice effortlessly spanned a wide range of genres, captivating the audience with its raw power and vulnerability. Whether performing a song she'd written or one by someone else, each note was infused with passion and authenticity, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to witness her remarkable talent firsthand.

As the sun began to set, the lighting design flawlessly complemented the changing atmosphere, creating a visual spectacle that enhanced the overall experience. The lighting design effectively worked alongside the sun and shadows of nature, and the golden hue which accompanied the sunset was especially magical as it bathed the stage in a captivating glow.

Adding another layer of depth to the performance, the well-incorporated video elements were super effective. During the poignant song Irrelevant, large screens displayed videos highlighting female empowerment and the Black Lives Matter movement, creating a really significant and moving moment. These thoughtful additions not only showcased Pink's commitment to social justice but also deeply resonated with the audience, reminding everyone of the transformative power of music.

Pink's concert at Hyde Park was a remarkable demonstration of talent that left an enduring impression on all attendees. Her exceptional audience interaction, mind-blowing circus skills, and flawless vocals were the pillars of an evening that will be cherished. While there were fleeting moments of respite, they were quickly overshadowed by the sheer energy and excitement that filled the show. An undeniable triumph and a testament to her artistry, Pink and her team created a multi-sensory experience that was a treat for all in attendance.

Harry Styles at Wembley Stadium review: Where Strangers Become Friends and Fans Become Family

Among the huge array of concerts on offer, some artists possess the unique ability to create an atmosphere that goes beyond a mere performance. Harry Styles, the British singer-songwriter and former One Direction member, is undoubtedly one such artist. His closing show of four sell out’s at Wembley Stadium, was a testament to his musical prowess and stage craft. The ambience he created allowed for a magical showcase of the power of friendship and community; under Harry’s command, pure, unfiltered joy permeated the evening, and made it so special to both audience and performer.

Leading up to the performance there was a frenetic energy filling every space. With bedazzled outfits, feather boas and cowboy hats filling the arena, the sea of colour was a visual indication of the bright and beautiful performance to come. From the moment Harry took the stage, the crowd came even more alive and from the moment he stepped out it was clear that the enthusiasm and genuine love was mutual between the audience and the star. He effortlessly took the role of the charismatic conductor of this extraordinary symphony and invited everyone to forget their troubles and be truly free for a few hours.

What struck me the most about the concert was the strong sense of friendship and community that Harry fostered throughout the night. From the get go Styles created an inclusive space where everyone felt accepted, loved, and celebrated for exactly who they are. The vigour with which the audience embraced this was a testament to Harry's commitment to creating an environment where diversity and individuality are not only accepted but embraced.

Throughout the evening, Harry’s music served as a catalyst, bringing people from different backgrounds together, forming an unbreakable bond. Whether it was the carefree sing-alongs to Watermelon Sugar, the semi-cultish bowing at the alter of Mitch Rowland’s guitar solo in She, the united screams of “leave America” during As It Was, the congas in Treat People With Kindness or the group hugs and tears during Fine Line, each song became a thread weaving a tapestry of emotions that bound us all. With surprise songs added, including fan favourite Medicine and Sweet Creature which Styles hasn't performed since 2018, it really was a treat to be in the room for this momentous concert that truly cemented Styles' icon status. There’s no other word to describe it than electric. If unadulterated joy could power the country, Harry Styles would be head of operations.

Beyond the music, Harry's heartfelt interactions with the audience showcased his genuine care for his fans. He took the time to engage in conversations, listen to their stories, and make each person feel seen and valued. It was a beautiful reminder that music can bridge the gap between strangers and create lasting connections.

Production wise the show was a treat, with great visuals that told a story, lighting that complemented the sun slowly going down and a fun stage design which allowed many to get almost within touching distance of Mr Styles. A sensory feast, the show really provided all you could ask for.

As the night came to an end, I couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the incredible impact that music has on our lives and the meaningful connections it brings. Harry Styles not only delivered an outstanding performance but also reminded us of the significance of finding people who allow you to be yourself. It was a night that broke down barriers, opened hearts, and created lasting memories.

This concert was a life-altering experience, driven by exceptional musical talent, captivating stage presence, and a genuine commitment to building a community. Styles' ability to deeply connect with his audience, fostered an atmosphere of inclusivity and acceptance, making the event a remarkable celebration of music and our shared humanity. It was an occasion where strangers quickly became friends, and fans collectively experienced the transformative power of music. As an artist who truly embodies his craft, Harry Styles continues to redefine the concert experience, leaving an unforgettable impact on the hearts of his fans.

Pentatonix: The World Tour at the Eventim Apollo review: A shining celebration of musical talent

After having their concerts postponed in 2020, the Grammy Award winning group Pentatonix have finally made it to London with their world tour. Featuring the classics that made them popular such as Daft Punk and White Winter Hymnal, as well as soulful pieces from their most recent album, The Lucky Ones and some extra musical gems, the group proved that it was well worth the wait as they showcased their impressive range and versatility. As expected, their harmonies are spot-on and their ability to create complex sounds using only their voices continues to be astounding.

Having last seen them perform in 2016 what was immediately striking with this tour is just how amped up and emphasised the production value is; everything feels bolder and sleeker. This is in no small part thanks to the excellent lighting design by Damian Rogers which is so impeccably programmed to sync up with every beat and emotional inflection, it becomes a show all of its own. Equally the choreography perfectly complements each song and adds a real element of interest. The production team have done an incredible job of creating a concert experience that was not only musically impressive but also visually captivating.

What really makes the concert stand out is the energy and passion that Pentatonix bring to the procedings. The group have a palpable friendship and support network which shines from the stage and creates a really lovely atmosphere. Plus, they interact with the crowd, share stories and jokes, and make everyone feel like they are a part of the experience. It's clear that they genuinely love what they do and enjoy connecting with their fans.

Where before this could have been a 10/10 musical concert, now it’s a 10/10 musical spectacle. The bold elements don’t take away from the vocals, in fact they frame them perfectly and highlight just how tight and strong the vocal quintet are. It’s a matured and elevated experience and the talent and passion on stage make Pentatonix really shine. Hopefully it won't take seven years for the group to return to the UK because we need more!

Toby Sebastian at Omeara review: A stellar first headline show

Since originally releasing music in 2013, Toby Sebastian has been firmly carving his name in the music industry and this year has embarked on his first ever headline tour, which last night reached London's Omeara in a spectacular fashion.

A wonderful showcase of Toby's vocals and stellar song writing, the evening provided a mixture of fan favourite songs, as well as material from his upcoming album; all of which was received with warmth by the crowd who bopped along throughout. Also well received was a surprise appearance by Bridgerton star, Simone Ashley who got to showcase her hauntingly beautiful vocals in a duet of Rusty Snare. Fingers crossed we'll see the duo pair up again in future.

Striking throughout the evening was Sebastian's innate musicality which shone through as he poured his heart into the performance. His unique blend of indie and rock perfectly matches the raw, emotional sound of his voice, which particularly soars in his falsetto moments. These virtuosic sections were some of the best and most captivating of the set. In a bigger venue, with a slightly better sound system, one can only imagine how spectacular Toby would sound.

Equally, the evening had some really high octane moments, especially in the closing rendition of Train To Mexico which felt like a party and was certainly a fan fave. Sebastian really lets the music speak for itself and doesn't interact a huge amount with the audience which means sometimes there's a feeling of disconnect, however, his charisma still shines through and he really gives his all musically.

The three piece band work together like a well oiled machine and everyone seems like they're genuinely having fun on stage which is a real treat to see. 

Mention must also go to Louis Oliver who performed a super solid opening set and really charmed the audience through his raspy, incredibly powerful vocals. 

Overall a well-curated set list, and a solid and evident appreciation for music and performing made this a really special night. Whilst there's no release date yet for Toby's next album, the sneak peeks say it's going to be a really enjoyable listen; and the next tour which will hopefully accompany it will be so worth attending!

The UK’s biggest summer party just got even bigger! Capital Breakfast’s Roman Kemp, Sian Welby and Sonny Jay have confirmed on air this morning (Tuesday 7th June) that Sam Ryder and Nathan Dawe have joined the star-studded line-up for Capital’s Summertime Ball with Barclaycard, which takes place this Sunday 12th June at Wembley Stadium. 

 

The stratospheric rise of the UK’s Eurovision hero Sam Ryder continues, as he gets ready to take to the world-famous Wembley Stadium stage at Capital’s Summertime Ball with Barclaycard. Sam – who topped The Official Big Top 40 chart last month with ‘SPACE MAN’ - is one of the hottest acts in the country right now following his phenomenal success flying the flag for the UK at Eurovision 2022.

 

Nathan Dawe is also confirmed to play the Ball, where he’s guaranteed to bring major summer party vibes to 80,000 Capital listeners. The multi-platinum-selling DJ and producer is responsible for huge hits including ‘Lighter’ featuring KSI, ‘Flowers’ feat. Jaykae and MALIKA, and his most recent release, ‘21 Reasons’ with Ella Henderson.

 

Sam Ryder and Nathan Dawe join the bill after Capital Breakfast’s Roman Kemp, Sian Welby and Sonny Jay revealed on air yesterday that Maisie Peters, who is currently supporting Ed Sheeran on his ‘+ – = ÷ x Tour’, will play Capital’s Summertime Ball with Barclaycard. The singer-songwriter is one of this year’s most hotly tipped rising stars and her set is not to be missed.

 

The countdown to Capital’s Summertime Ball with Barclaycard is officially on, and the only way in is to win – listen to Capital for the chance to join the sold-out crowd of 80,000 Capital listeners at the UK’s biggest summer party this Sunday.

 

Yesterday Capital revealed four-time GRAMMY Award-winning and seven-time BRIT Award-winning superstar Ed Sheeran will open the show on Sunday. Live DJ sets from Capital’s Marvin Humes and MistaJam will get the crowd in party mode from midday onwards when the doors open, before Ed Sheeran takes to the world-famous Summertime Ball stage at 2pm for a very special set. For those watching at home the Global Player live stream starts from 2pm.

Lois Morgan Gay Releases Debut Single 'Don't Be That Guy'

Lois Morgan Gay is so excited to release her debut single ‘Don’t Be That Guy' which will be available on all music streaming platforms from March 25th 2022. The track is influenced by a mix of performers including Lianne La Havas, Amy Winehouse and Aretha Franklin. 'Don’t Be That Guy' explores the inner monologue of yearning more from someone rather than just being friends.

"Have you ever gotten to that point in a relationship where it is going really well and you are hopeful that it's going to work then…BANG! They are not ready for anything “serious” and then end up being just another failed relationship? That's what this song is about haha” Lois says.

Lois crafted the single with musician/guitarist Jack Louis Rennie who helped with music arrangement and also plays guitar on the track alongside Meelie Traill on bass, and Max Blunos on drums. The track is produced by Ben Robbins.

The London based singer/songwriter was born and raised in Bristol, she delivers smooth R&B with a soulful feel to her voice, writing about heartbreak, relationships, and yearning. Her music is vocally led, having been heavily inspired by the likes of Adele, Aretha Franklin and YEBBA. Music has always been a huge part of Lois' life, there was always music playing in the house growing up. Lois began her performing career in theatre and then discovered her love for singing and writing at the age of 14. She states "Telling a story and expressing my feelings and inner thoughts through my music enables me to connect with the audience and that is the best feeling in the world”.

Lois is currently in the line-up of the final to win a £100,000 record deal with Alpha records, she will perform at the Indigo at the O2 Arena on March 30th where she will debut this song live for the very first time.

In The Studio with Sharon Sexton and Rob Fowler | Vision of You


Stars of Bat Out of Hell the musical Rob Fowler and Sharon Sexton are currently in the process of recording their debut duets album, Vision of You. The album is not only a celebration and showcase of their glorious vocals, but tells the back story of Sloane and Falco, the characters they play in the show.

I went along to the recording studio for a sneak peek at the process and to chat to the pair about the album and how the journey has been so far:


Alongside Sharon and Rob is pianist extraordinaire, Steve Corley who provides the beautiful accompaniments for the pieces and brings a warmth and real feel to the music. Sharon describes the album as "a box of chocolates" which has something for everyone and the pair hope it will be a treat for both fans and non-fans of Bat Out of Hell.

Vision of You features music from a number of artists, including The Civil Wars, Lady Gaga, Jim Steinman and Glenn Hansard, all artists whom Sharon and Rob have been inspired by.



From what I've seen so far of Vision of You, I know that it's going to be an incredibly raw, heartfelt and moving piece of work. Lucie Jones, Live at Zedel | Review

One of my first ever reviews on Rewrite This Story, was of Lucie Jones' cabaret at Waterloo East where I completely fell in love with her insane voice and magnetic personality. In the two years since that concert, Lucie has  starred as Elle Woods in the UK tour of Legally Blonde, wowed as Maureen in Rent and was the UK's entry in the Eurovision contest... I guess you could say it's been a pretty quiet time for her?! I have been lucky enough to see Lucie in her various roles, but there's always something special about a solo concert.

The Zedel consistently provides the perfect atmosphere for a cosy, intimate night and allows the sole focus to be on the outstanding vocals of whoever is performing, so seeing such a talented vocalist take the stage there was a real treat. From the get-go Lucie commands the space and welcomes us into, what feels like, the inner circle. Her bouncy humour and infectious personality puts us completely in the palm of her hand and allows us to experience a carefree night of laughs and joy, whilst our attention never wavers. In my experience of musical theatre cabarets, there are only a number of performers who are able to capture a crowd so effortlessly and remain natural and unforced throughout, Lucie has truly mastered this and it's clear why she has so many loyal fans.

Despite only having about 24 hours to put this concert together, the entire thing felt sleek and polished. MD for the concert was the outstandingly wonderful, Sarah Travis who looked and sounded as if she was born to play the piano. The banter between the pair is hilarious and they work together so well, that even moments which go slightly wrong, almost feel as if they're scripted.


I would talk about each song on the set list, but every single one was a highlight. From the opening The Winner Takes it All to the closing Eurovision song, Never Give Up On You, Lucie showcased her incredibly well supported vocals  and ability to act through song. Particularly impressive, is the control in Lucie's voice; her well-honed technique is evident through her smooth mix of straight tone and vibrato, as well as her effortless mix and belt. A stand out moment for me was the mesmerising If I Loved You, where we got to see a more nuanced, gentler side to Lucie. She truly is a masterful performer and the hard work she puts into her craft is clear in every second she is on stage.

Although every song was outstanding, I will fangirl a bit more and mention a few of my other favourites... As a huge Anastasia fan, I adored the lyrical, Disney-esque rendition of Journey To The Past; the intensely beautiful, Nothing Stops Another Day pulled at my heart and That's Life is made for Lucie's voice. Alongside stellar vocals, Lucie provides some cracking anecdotes and ad libs which could be a comedy show of their own!

We were also treated to two special guests: Danny Mac and Rebecca Stenhouse. Rebecca Joined Lucie as they channeled Cady and Janis in the Mean Girls jam, Apex Predator, before Rebecca performed a fantastic version of Hopelessly Devoted To You, which she made feel contemporary with some added riffs and option ups. Danny took on the role of Dr. Pomatter in a sickly sweet performance of It Only Takes a Taste from Waitress and brought a beautiful stillness to the Zedel with his performance of It All Fades Away.

I could rave about Lucie's voice for approximately the next 400 hours but I'll wrap it up here and say that if you turn down the chance to see Lucie in any future performances, you are missing out big time. If you want to see a truthful artist who is so giving in her performance and able to magnetise a crowd toward her, then go and witness the star that is, Lucie Jones.

The Rat Pack Live opens with Garrett Phillips who plays Sinatra introducing himself and the show and trying to get the audience participation go. Unfortunately this didn't quite work out as the theatre was very under-booked. 

Once this initial opening was over and the show got going everyone enjoyed his performance. He has a great voice and even the look of Frank Sinatra. In fact if you closed your eyes it could have been him. Philips really knows how to channel the musical master.

Nigel Casey also has a good voice but unfortunately doesn't come across as relaxed and cool as his character Dean Martin. There was a change of actor at the last minute for Sammy Davis Jr. He was played by last night by Darren Charles who I must say was a very good entertainer but didn't quite come across as his character.


Part way through the show we are introduced to the Burelli Sisters played by Laura Darton, Amelia Adams-Pearce and Joanna Walters. This brings glamour and a bit of pizzazz to the show as their performances are very, very good. 

The late appearance of Nicola Emmanuel as Ella Fitzgerald really lifts the show as she is fantastic- it's a shame she is not utilised more in the show.

The orchestra are great and all the music and songs are brilliantly and energetically performed. Unfortunately for the cast the theatre was fairly empty but the audience who were there were very appreciative and gave them a standing ovation after the rousing rendition of  My Way.

Anyone who is Sinatra fan will enjoy the show. The music is nostalgic, well performed and provides fantastic entertainment. The Rat Pack- Live From Las Vegas is well worth a visit and I had a very enjoyable evening.

Sinners Club, Soho Theatre | Review

The Soho Theatre invites you to the Sinners Club. We find ourselves in the Upstairs space of this buzzing theatre in the heart of London’s West End. As we walk in we are welcomed by a room set in the round, decorated as an old school recording studio; many an old-fashioned rug, musical instruments and microphones, soundproofing on the wall as well as a few photographs. Scattered around the studio space are members of the band playing light Jazz music to set the mood. 

The concept of the album is simple, its based on the story of the last woman to be hanged in the UK. The original songs written and performed by Lucy Rivers and the band The Bad Mothers- tailored around the story of Ruth Ellis- are an eclectic mix of genres that seem to pulsate through Rivers as they affect her own character narrative as well as the albums. As Rivers enters to start the show, she is this fierce woman in black, taking control of the room. Rivers throughout the show is energetic and intriguing as she goes through the narrative of the concept album. 

However, one of her flaws was her reliance on the audience and audience interaction. The reliance on an audience is a double-edged sword dependant on the audience itself, it can be a struggle for an audience to lose inhibitions and join in. Rivers needs to pick her moments and judge the moments when she does or doesn’t interact. Another thing that needs altering within the show is the amount of dead air in-between songs. As a performer myself I appreciate the device of silence but when its long periods, it becomes a period of time for the audience to wander. 


Despite these flaws of the show, the music really made it- in a world of music made by computers in the mainstream and the jazz hands of the West End - this was a refreshing use of alternative types of music. The whole band was slick, and looked like they were having fun throughout the show. Rivers’ voice soared throughout, despite her over use of falsetto. What truly impressed this writer though was the musicianship packed within the show. The sheer volume of different instruments used was brilliant and to a very high quality. I personally appreciate musicians and musicianship, having worked with a few myself, so to have a live band and for it perform so well, it really brought a smile to my face. 

If you’re looking for something a little different, take up your invitation for the Sinners Club, because despite its flaws, there are many a good aspect of this show to enjoy. This show is the palate cleanser that the West End is craving. Try something different and enjoy a night of music that you will not forget in a hurry.

Marisha Wallace: Soul Holiday, Charing Cross Theatre | Review

There's no denying that Marisha Wallace is a powerhouse; in the short time she's been in London she's really made herself a feature of the West End and a must see star. Continuing her conquest of the West End theatre scene, Marisha recently released a Christmas album, Soul Holiday, full of festive treats to get us all in the Christmas spirit and yesterday performed these musical gems for us at the Charing Cross Theatre.

The concert included her jazzy Christmas re-imaginations, gospel songs and some musical theatre classics as well as her hilarious/motivational/all round brilliant interludes between songs. Her warm personality, outstanding vocals and ability to work a crowd had the audience in the palm of her hand within a matter of moments.

Personal highlights included 'O Come All Ye Faithful', the brilliantly upbeat 'Joyful, Joyful', and her heartfelt performance of 'I'll Be Home For Christmas' which she explained was particularly meaningful as she's been away from her family and friends for so long. 'He Chose Me' was vocally faultless and especially moving. Her stunning rendition of 'I'm Here' from The Colour Purple (she played Celie in the production at Cadogan Hall) was incredible and a testament to her vocal and acting skills.

Two fantastic guests joined the festive bliss with Tyrone Huntley showing off his smooth, glorious voice in 'Last Christmas' and 'What's Going On' and Rachel Tucker in the Christmas favourite, 'Winter Wonderland' and the hilarious, belt-tastic 'Take Me or Leave Me' from Rent. Both were great, their friendship with Marisha really shone through and contributed to the warm and cosy, festive feeling.

Marisha spoke candidly about a number of topics including her grandmother who inspired her to continue singing, food (a festive staple) and Jesus. Whilst she spoke a lot about her religion, it was not in a forceful way and she explained that "it doesn't matter who or what you believe in, just believe in you and that you can do anything". It was refreshing to hear such honesty and motivation.

Whilst the 5pm audience were not the most enthusiastic, everyone still seemed to enjoy the concert as they basked in the glory of Marisha's voice and talent.  The intimate setting with the four fantastic band members, three backup singers, two gorgeous gowns and one Marisha was all there needed to be to create an evening of festive magic. 

Marisha is charmismatic, charming, vocally outstanding and just a born performer. I have no doubt that Marisha's career will keep going up and up as she reaches wider audiences and shows people what a first-rate performer she is and I can't wait to see what's to come. Scott Alan, Hippodrome Casino | Review

The Hippodrome Casino is fast becoming one of my favourite venues as I see more and more brilliant performances. Scott Alan's concert was no exception, with gorgeous music, brilliant singers and a hilarious commentary throughout, it was a perfect night. After spending the weekend covering West End Live for Stage Faves then heading to The Theatre Cafe to see Rachel Tucker and Marisha Wallace, I hot-footed it over to the casino for a night of music from one of my favourite musical theatre composers.

I have adored Scott's music for as long as I can remember, I don't recall exactly how I found it but it's been with me for most of my childhood and I've been scouring youtube for every version of each song for a long time and have fallen in love with every single one. Although Scott has performed in London a number of times, I have never been able to attend so when I reached out to Scott on twitter and he was kind enough to offer me a ticket, my stagey heart was ready to burst and I was ecstatic that I would finally hear his songs performed live by a host of incredible performers.

Both acts were a celebration of Scott's career with the stars taking the stage to perform theirs and Scott's favourite compositions.  Scott joked how each song he writes is depressing, even his happy songs are emotive ballads which is extremely true and for me, someone who thrives on emotional, depressing music (I have playlist just for it) it was all I couldv'e asked for.

My personal favourites of the night were the stunning Lucie Jones, who dashed straight from West End Live to perform 'Never Neverland' and 'Home' both of which were devastatingly gorgeous. Jodie Jacobs who I've been lucky enough to see in 27 and Lizzie performed 'Stay' which showed off her epic voice and Kieran Brown gave a heart-wrenching, powerful performance of one of my favourites, 'Again'. 

Another favourite section of the concert was when Scott introduced three competition winners who were each going to perform. He encouraged the audience to be extremely supportive of them both in the concert and generally in the performing industry and explained how he loves showcasing new talent. Erin Caldwell was the first of the three winners, performing 'Always' so beautifully. Her tone, clarity and control was just incredible and you could've heard a pin drop. A masterclass in graceful performance. Secondly we had Sabrina Basile with 'And There It Is', Sabrina's acting throughout the song was impeccable, her voice is effortless and beautiful but her overall interpretation of the song really made it something special. The final of the three, Bill Harvey was introduced with a candid chat from Scott about depression and how it affected him, saying that he'd felt like he was the "only person to wake up heavy" and how dark things got for him but that we can all make our way out of the darkness and heaviness. Bill performed the beautiful and emotional 'Anything Worth Holding Onto' with a sincerity which shone through and drew the audience in. 

Scott's personality is just infectious and he carries the whole concert with his own unique brand of crass inappropriateness and self-deprecating humour. There were laugh out loud moments from start to finish and the entire concert, which of course overran it's anticipated hour and a half run time by almost an hour, flew by. Scott is candid and honest and whilst he is humorous and shocking, he quickly slips into his own world when performing himself and you can see how much music means to him. I especially loved 'Simpler' which was heartfelt and touching.

As I said before, each and every performance was absolutely brilliant and I could say fabulous things about all of them but that would mean we'd be here all day! Scott's music is touching and truthful and it's crazy that the whole world don't know about it and him. If you get the chance to see Scott or any of the performers in concert then take the opportunity up and you're guaranteed a fantastic night!
