Comedy masters Mischief Theatre are taking their first steps into musical territory with the brand-new show Thespians. The world premiere will take place at Mercury Theatre Colchester in May 2026 before touring the UK, including stops in Bath, Guildford, Cardiff, and Manchester.
Set in 534 BC, the show reimagines the birth of theatre itself with Mischief’s signature brand of chaos and heart. The story follows Greece’s smallest island as it fights to survive a deadly prayer competition, until Thespis accidentally invents acting and changes history forever.
Co-written by Mischief’s Jonathan Sayer and composer Ed Zanders, Thespians is a joyful, witty, and high-energy celebration of storytelling. Expect big laughs, catchy songs, and clever nods to the origins of the stage we all love.
Jonathan Sayer said:
“I'm absolutely delighted that Thespians will be touring the UK next year. I've always loved musicals and it's been a total joy to co-write one, especially with such a skilled composer as Ed.”
With its mix of comedy, music, and ancient mayhem, Thespians promises to bring something truly fresh to UK theatre audiences. Mischief fans and musical lovers alike can expect a hilarious and heart-filled adventure celebrating the power of performance. A fitting next act for one of the UK’s most inventive theatre companies.
