In its first ever English language performance Death Note the Musical in Concert provides an engaging experience, that beautifully combines a concert style show with the allure of a full-fledged production, including captivating staging, meticulously designed costumes, and expertly executed choreography. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Death Note franchise, which originated as a manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, this musical adaptation pays homage to the rich history and context of the source material.

The exceptional cast, which include remarkable talents such as Frances Mayli McCann as Misa Amane, Dean John Wilson as L, Aimie Atkinson as Rem and Adam Pascal as Ryuk, deliver performances that breathe life into the characters. Their portrayal of the characters showcasing both their impressive vocal prowess and their deep understanding of the emotional complexities within the story which questions morality, justice and power.

While the storyline can be a bit challenging to follow, particularly for those not acquainted with the original Manga, the production's sleek execution manages to pack in a lot without feeling overwhelming. The adaptation skilfully navigates the intricate plot points, a testament to the creative team's dedication to translating the essence of Death Note to the stage.

The translation of various elements from the manga to the stage is nothing short of impressive in this truly ambitious concert debut. The show's director, Nick Winston, and the rest of the creative team, including choreographer Alexzandra Sarmiento and costume designer Will Skeet, deserve commendation for their remarkable work in seamlessly integrating these elements into the live performance. The audience's palpable elation is a testament to the success of this collaborative creative endeavour.

The pre and post-show buzz, along with the audience's enthusiastic reactions, clearly indicate that Death Note the Musical has found its niche. Wonderfully, it manages to attract those who might not typically be drawn to musicals, thanks to its connection to the established Death Note franchise and the efforts of the cast and creatives. This broad appeal speaks volumes about the production's ability to engage and captivate diverse audiences.

Admittedly, the sound balance did exhibit some issues on opening night, which can be expected with such an ambitious score. While it occasionally detracted from the overall experience, it's understandable for a complex production. Once the sound balance is finely tuned, there's no doubt that this show will achieve the impactful resonance it aims for.

The Choir of Man at the Arts Theatre Review: A Musical Celebration of Humanity

I recently had the pleasure of making a return visit to see The Choir of Man at the Arts theatre, a show which celebrates humanity, pubs and music in a truly joyous way. 

Although the onstage beer wasn't working at this particular performance, the setup of the Arts for this show is so well done. The audience are truly made to feel like they've entered a community hub and the pre-show interactions perfectly pave the way for the impressive show that's to follow. 

The show's concept is simple, it portrays a group of men coming together in a pub setting, sharing their stories and bonding through music. The songs are a bit random and there's not much of a through line but the seamless blend of humour, heartfelt moments, and raw emotions make this a truly memorable show, perfect for a lighthearted, fun night out.

This really is a show about friendship and the cast's camaraderie is evident throughout, with little interactions throughout coming across as truly genuine. There's also a really special connection created with the audience. The interactions with spectators, make you feel like you're part of the lively gathering, further enhancing the immersive experience.

The set and lighting design (Richard Dinnen) perfectly complement the show's no frills ambiance, transporting us to the cozy pub atmosphere where the magic unfolds. It's simple yet effective, allowing the spotlight to remain on the performers and their exceptional talents. The whole show is a vocal treat, with handfuls of glorious harmonies as well as some great dance and movement moments.

The Choir of Man is a true testament to the power of music and its ability to bring people together. It not only showcases the incredible vocal abilities of the cast but also celebrates the sense of community and brotherhood, leaving the audience with a heartwarming feeling. It's not the most cohesive or polished show, and it probably won't change your life but the overall joyous experience is exactly what we all need right now. 

This show is the perfect embodiment of live theatre. It's a really unique show that has rightfully carved out a space in the West End and deserves to be seen and celebrated. If you love music and want an hour and a half of feel-good-fun then this is the show for you!

Embarking on a wondrous return, the dynamic musical Ride, crafted by Freya Catrin Smith and Jack Williams, is back to captivate audiences with an enchanting odyssey like no other. Having previously seen this show as part of the Vault Festival in 2020, it's amazing to see how it has developed and become even more of a theatrical gem.

This thrilling new production delves into the extraordinary escapades of Annie Londonderry, an indomitable spirit who shattered barriers in 1895 by becoming the first woman to cycle around the globe. Fearlessly challenging societal norms and religious expectations, Annie spins a captivating tale that dances on the edge of truth and fiction, skillfully molding narratives to serve her greater cause. She fearlessly embraces her convictions, even if it means bending the boundaries of morality. Wrapped around Annie's finger from the moment the metaphorical curtain is raised, we are spellbound by her storytelling prowess.

This British masterpiece takes us on an emotional rollercoaster ride, filled with hearty laughter and unflinchingly honest revelations about life and society, leaving a profound impact. With every twist and turn, the characters' raw emotions and vulnerabilities are beautifully portrayed, drawing us into their world and ensnaring our hearts until the closing moments.

The brilliance of Ride shines through the remarkable performances of its two-person cast: Liv Andrusier as Annie and Katy Ellis as Martha. Their chemistry is palpable, and they breathe life into their characters with heartfelt authenticity. Liv's portrayal of Annie is a multi-dimensional masterpiece, blending determination and defiance as she navigates a male-dominated world, striving to be heard. Her captivating Bostonian drawl lures us in, and her vocal prowess keeps us enchanted as she flawlessly delivers the demanding score, showcasing a masterclass in acting through song.

Under the direction of Sarah Meadows, Liv's performance radiates authenticity, leaving no doubt that this role was destined for her. Her portrayal of Annie exudes old Hollywood star quality, and her stage presence is truly remarkable.

Katy Ellis skilfully takes on the role of Martha. With comic flair and charming wit, Ellis brings Martha's thoughts to life, infusing the character with delightful nuance. While Annie weaves the narrative, Martha's hesitance and humorous antics provide the perfect balance, eliciting laughter from the audience. Throughout the show, Katy astounds as she embodies various characters in Annie's story, infusing each with unique purpose and unveiling layers of compassion, empathy, and a hint of romance.

Both Liv and Katy breathe a profound humanity into these characters, capturing the hearts of the audience. Their nuanced performances are a testament to their immense talent and dedication, leaving us in awe of their emotional range.

The minimalist yet ingenious set design by Amy Jane Cook effortlessly transports us to multiple locations, aided by clever use of props and set pieces that set our imaginations free. Matt Powell's projections expand the space, while Andrew Johnson's sound design adds an extra layer of brilliance, spotlighting the subtlest of sounds.

At the heart and soul of Ride lies its soul-stirring music. The mesmerising melodies and emotionally charged lyrics take us on an unforgettable journey, resonating deeply within us. While some musical moments may seem repetitive, they ultimately deliver an emotional and vocal punch, showcasing the brilliance of new British compositions.

Ride is an absolute triumph of storytelling, talent, and artistic vision. This emotionally charged musical takes us on a profound journey of self-reflection and connection. While it may not boast the grandeur of a West End spectacle, its simplicity and sincerity are what set it apart. Ride showcases the very essence of what theatre can offer, leaving us yearning to relive this magical journey again and again.

Talking at Night by Claire Daverley is a beautifully quiet treasure of a book, taking readers on a heartfelt journey, through the complexities of human relationships. Daverley's storytelling is absolutely exquisite diving into the world's of her characters, leaving readers teary eyed and filled with a whirlwind of emotions.

The characters in Talking at Night are expertly crafted, with each one feeling genuine and relatable, baring their fears, insecurities and dreams for all to see. Daverley skilfully delves into their minds painting a picture of their struggles and victories. The protagonist, Rosie's, path of self discovery is captivating and truly inspiring while the supporting characters add a level of richness and depth that elevates the narrative and fully engages the reader.

The novel embraces the honesty of life, presenting stories that feel authentic and sincere. It beautifully showcases the significance of "normal" lives reminding us that they hold just as much magic and worth as those portrayed in larger than life media tales.

One of the books highlights is the interweaving of dual timelines featuring Will and Rosie, the leads. This technique enriches the plot and offers a reflection, on how our past shapes our present and future.

Daverley's poetic prose is another strong aspect of Talking at Night. Her use of words is incredibly powerful and she manages to captivate readers, by immersing them in the emotional world of the novel, never shying away from tackling difficult subjects. The exploration of themes like love, loss, forgiveness, and redemption are so thoughtfully handled, making the novel resonate on a profound level. The vibrant descriptions enable readers to feel the characters happiness and sadness as if they were personally involved resulting in a reading experience that's reminiscent of watching a film. Fans of Love, Rosie and Me Before You will certainly enjoy this tale.

My only slight reservation is that, in a few instances, the pacing felt slightly off and there was a slight lag. However, this is a minor flaw which doesn't really detract from how strong this book is, and in some ways could be seen as reflection of life and the up and down pacing of the real world off the page.

Talking at Night is an exceptional work of fiction that should be celebrated for its thought-provoking themes, remarkable character development, and lyrical prose. Claire Daverley has crafted a tale that tugs at the heartstrings and lingers in the mind, making it a must-read for anyone who appreciates a deeply moving and immersive literary experience. I wholeheartedly recommend this novel and hope that it will stay with you long after you've turned the last page.

The newest exhibition at the V&A, Diva is an absolute treat, immersing visitors in the captivating world of awe-inspiring women who have enchanted us with their extraordinary talents, strength, and charisma.

From the moment you step into the exhibition hall, you truly feel a part of the glamour and empowerment. Split into two acts, the first being historical context of diva’s and the second focussing on the modern day artists, this enchanting journey through the lives and legacies of iconic divas is really awe-inspiring.

The curation of Diva is exceptionally well done. Skilfully interweaving various disciplines such as music, film, fashion, and photography as well as showcasing objects alongside outfits to tell personal and intriguing stories. The exhibit creates a multi-dimensional experience that effortlessly transports visitors into the captivating world of these remarkable women. Every display is meticulously crafted, capturing the very essence of the divas, their defining moments, and their profound contributions to popular culture. With 60 costumes and 250 items spanning from the 19th century to today, there is so much to take in and a number of highlights to be found throughout. Some personal favourites included the various Bob Mackie designs, which are accompanied by original artwork, Elton John's Louis XIV-inspired 50th birthday party look and the fringed black dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot in 1959.

The exhibition is a treasure trove of memorabilia and artefacts, breathing life into the stories of these extraordinary divas. From the elaborate stage costumes that exude the flamboyance of performers like Madonna and Lady Gaga, to the intimate handwritten letters and personal diaries that offer a glimpse into the private lives of divas like Billie Holiday and Aretha Franklin, each piece on display serves as a testament to their unrivalled greatness.

What sets the Diva exhibition apart is its unwavering commitment to highlighting the immense cultural impact of these trailblazing women. It delves deep into how these divas challenged societal norms, shattered glass ceilings, and emerged as symbols of empowerment for generations of women. A Strange Loop at Barbican is an absolutely remarkable production that pushes the boundaries of theatre and delves deep into the complexities of identity, self-worth, and the human experience. From the moment the curtains opened, I was captivated by the raw and unapologetic exploration of the protagonist, Usher’s psyche.

This is a show which is really reliant on a united and strong cast and thankfully the performances throughout are super strong. The entire cast deliver powerful, emotionally charged portrayals. Due to the nature of the show, it may not directly resonate with the audience but the cast do an astounding job of making you feel for Usher’s story and really connect on a profound level. Each actor skilfully brings their character to life, blending humour, vulnerability, and intense introspection in perfect harmony. The energy on stage is infectious, and you really find yourself absorbed in the story.

The writing by Michael R. Jackson is truly effective. With a script that flawlessly combines witty dialogue, thought-provoking monologues, and catchy musical numbers to create a narrative which effectively mirrors the issues broached throughout. A Strange Loop tackles themes of race, sexuality, self-doubt, and societal expectations with unflinching honesty, making it a deeply relevant and relatable experience for audiences of all backgrounds.

The staging and set design (Arnulfo Maldonado) are brilliantly executed, utilising minimalistic elements to create a visually striking and versatile backdrop for the story. There are times when the stage feels underused but toward the end of the musical, it’s really stretched to its limits and is so impactful. The imaginative use of lighting (Jen Schriever) adds another layer of depth to the production, enhancing the emotional impact of each scene.

Furthermore, the direction by Stephen Brackett brings out the best in the cast and the material. The pacing ensures that every moment lands with the intended impact, at times causing a collective gasp from the audience. Brackett's vision seamlessly integrates the music, choreography, and storytelling, resulting in a cohesive and thought-provoking theatrical experience.

While A Strange Loop may not resonate with everyone, it has the power to profoundly impact those who are open to engaging with challenging themes. This production serves as a powerful testament to the transformative nature of theatre, as it encourages introspection, sparks meaningful conversations, and fosters empathy among its viewers.

If I were to have any reservation in giving it a perfect five-star rating, it would be that the complexity of the narrative and the rapid pace of the production might make it slightly difficult for some audience members to fully grasp the subtleties of the story. However, I firmly believe that this should not dissuade anyone from experiencing this groundbreaking piece of theatre during its limited run.

A Strange Loop at Barbican is an audacious and unforgettable production that dares to push the boundaries of what theatre can achieve. In just an hour and forty minutes, it fearlessly challenges societal norms, delves deep into internal struggles, and ultimately celebrates the triumphant journey of self-discovery. Prepare to be moved, thoroughly entertained, and enlightened as you embark on this hypnotic exploration of the human psyche.

The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium review: A Delightfully Nostalgic Experience

Magic, wonder, and unforgettable melodies reign supreme as you step into the mesmerising world of The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium. This enchanting production, a transfer from the Leicester Curve, weaves a delightful experience that is sure to captivate audiences of all ages.

Thanks to Nikolai Foster’s direction, once the curtain rises you will find yourself immersed in a world of imagination and fantasy. The detailed costumes, effective sets and strong video effects seamlessly blend together to create a visual spectacle that fits so well with the whimsical and well-loved world of Oz. The semi-modern, steampunk aesthetic lends a unique twist to the classic tale, infusing it with a fresh and vibrant energy.

The cast of The Wizard of Oz delivers exceptional performances, breathing life into the beloved characters with charm and charisma. Dorothy, portrayed by the stunning Georgina Onuorah with innocence and determination, effortlessly captures our hearts as she embarks on her journey to find her way back home. Joining Dorothy on yellow brick road are three iconic friends she makes. Searching for courage, the Cowardly Lion is played superbly well by Jason Manford, who is perfectly evocative of Lahr in the film but with a spin of his own that really works. Looking for a heart the Tin Man is oiled by well by Ashley Banjo who creates some really brilliant moments; the vocals aren’t as stellar as they could be but his dance skills and charisma more than make up for it. Completing the quad is Louis Gaunt as the Scarecrow searching for a heart, who is utterly charming and a real triple threat. The chemistry between the group is well portrayed, however on stage you don’t feel as a strong of a connection to their journey and never root for them quite enough; their story is enjoyable but not as emotionally intense as it could be.

The other supporting cast members shine in their respective roles, each bringing their own unique flair and personality to the story. Christina Bianco’s Glinda and Dianne Pilkington’s Wicked Witch of the West are throughly entertaining, if a little underdeveloped but both provide some of the stand solos of the show. The musical numbers in The Wizard of Oz combine Andrew Lloyd Webber's new compositions with the beloved songs from the classic film and while Webber's additions may not steal the spotlight, they seamlessly blend with the original score, enriching the overall experience. The familiar melodies of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’ undoubtedly take centre stage, evoking a wave of nostalgia and bringing smiles to the faces of the audience.

This musical really does exactly what you’d expect it to in telling the story which so many love. All the classic moments are featured and there are also some fun things to spot such as Ozified show names (West Witch Story, Margaret Hamilton etc…) a hidden Olaf and some swanky costumes which are truly Ozian. However, act two is a little bit lacking as a whole, with the video aspect which is so effective in act one, becoming gimmicky and a little basic, especially when showing the wicked witch’s army and the flying monkeys. Moments which could have been really awe-inspiring are instead brushed over and there’s never a true wow moment.

A way the production does soar is in how it pays heartfelt homage to the original book by Frank L. Baum, incorporating references that will surely delight fans. The inclusion of Dorothy's return to Kansas in her Oz dress adds a touch of nostalgia, serving as a loving nod to the source material. These thoughtful gestures elevate the production, reminding us of the timeless charm that made the story a classic in the first place.

It’s not a faultless show but The Wizard of Oz offers a delightful escape into a world of fantasy and adventure. With its talented cast, striking visuals, and heartfelt nods to the original, this production is well worth seeing. Whether you are reliving cherished childhood memories or experiencing the magic for the very first time, this show will transport you to a place where dreams come true and a trip to Oz should definitely be part of your summer plans.

In a stunning showcase of talent and entertainment, last night Pink took to the Great Oak Stage at Hyde Park, to perform a captivating show which closed her weekend at the BST festival. An awe-inspiring experience, her limitless energy, exceptional connection with the crowd, astonishing circus abilities, and unwavering vocals took the spotlight and created a really really entertaining evening. Although there were a few moments of slight lulls, the other exhilarating moments more than made up for them, resulting in a truly unforgettable evening of pure enjoyment.

Pink's natural ability to engage with her audience was truly extraordinary. From the moment she stepped onto the stage, she effortlessly commanded everyone's attention with her charming presence. She skilfully interacted with the crowd throughout the concert, making each person feel like an integral part of the performance. From taking various teddy bears, to celebrating first concert experiences and showcasing a fan's artwork, her interactions were authentic and heartfelt, creating a really welcoming atmosphere and some truly memorable audience experiences.

It's not a Pink show without some gravity defying circus acts and even at the vast open air venue she did not disappoint. Whether she was soaring high above the stage showing aerial silks or executing some beautiful choreography whilst suspended in the air, her talent left spectators in awe. These mesmerising moments added a dynamic element to the show, that truly showcased Pink's versatility and fearlessness as an artist, cementing her as one of the best in the business.

Pink's vocals remained flawless throughout the entire evening, delivering powerful performances filled with precision and emotion. Her voice effortlessly spanned a wide range of genres, captivating the audience with its raw power and vulnerability. Whether performing a song she'd written or one by someone else, each note was infused with passion and authenticity, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to witness her remarkable talent firsthand.

As the sun began to set, the lighting design flawlessly complemented the changing atmosphere, creating a visual spectacle that enhanced the overall experience. The lighting design effectively worked alongside the sun and shadows of nature, and the golden hue which accompanied the sunset was especially magical as it bathed the stage in a captivating glow.

Adding another layer of depth to the performance, the well-incorporated video elements were super effective. During the poignant song Irrelevant, large screens displayed videos highlighting female empowerment and the Black Lives Matter movement, creating a really significant and moving moment. These thoughtful additions not only showcased Pink's commitment to social justice but also deeply resonated with the audience, reminding everyone of the transformative power of music.

Pink's concert at Hyde Park was a remarkable demonstration of talent that left an enduring impression on all attendees. Her exceptional audience interaction, mind-blowing circus skills, and flawless vocals were the pillars of an evening that will be cherished. While there were fleeting moments of respite, they were quickly overshadowed by the sheer energy and excitement that filled the show. An undeniable triumph and a testament to her artistry, Pink and her team created a multi-sensory experience that was a treat for all in attendance.

Among the huge array of concerts on offer, some artists possess the unique ability to create an atmosphere that goes beyond a mere performance. Harry Styles, the British singer-songwriter and former One Direction member, is undoubtedly one such artist. His closing show of four sell out’s at Wembley Stadium, was a testament to his musical prowess and stage craft. The ambience he created allowed for a magical showcase of the power of friendship and community; under Harry’s command, pure, unfiltered joy permeated the evening, and made it so special to both audience and performer.

Leading up to the performance there was a frenetic energy filling every space. With bedazzled outfits, feather boas and cowboy hats filling the arena, the sea of colour was a visual indication of the bright and beautiful performance to come. From the moment Harry took the stage, the crowd came even more alive and from the moment he stepped out it was clear that the enthusiasm and genuine love was mutual between the audience and the star. He effortlessly took the role of the charismatic conductor of this extraordinary symphony and invited everyone to forget their troubles and be truly free for a few hours.

What struck me the most about the concert was the strong sense of friendship and community that Harry fostered throughout the night. From the get go Styles created an inclusive space where everyone felt accepted, loved, and celebrated for exactly who they are. The vigour with which the audience embraced this was a testament to Harry's commitment to creating an environment where diversity and individuality are not only accepted but embraced.

Throughout the evening, Harry’s music served as a catalyst, bringing people from different backgrounds together, forming an unbreakable bond. Whether it was the carefree sing-alongs to Watermelon Sugar, the semi-cultish bowing at the alter of Mitch Rowland’s guitar solo in She, the united screams of “leave America” during As It Was, the congas in Treat People With Kindness or the group hugs and tears during Fine Line, each song became a thread weaving a tapestry of emotions that bound us all. With surprise songs added, including fan favourite Medicine and Sweet Creature which Styles hasn't performed since 2018, it really was a treat to be in the room for this momentous concert that truly cemented Styles' icon status. There’s no other word to describe it than electric. If unadulterated joy could power the country, Harry Styles would be head of operations.

Beyond the music, Harry's heartfelt interactions with the audience showcased his genuine care for his fans. He took the time to engage in conversations, listen to their stories, and make each person feel seen and valued. It was a beautiful reminder that music can bridge the gap between strangers and create lasting connections.

Production wise the show was a treat, with great visuals that told a story, lighting that complemented the sun slowly going down and a fun stage design which allowed many to get almost within touching distance of Mr Styles. A sensory feast, the show really provided all you could ask for.

As the night came to an end, I couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the incredible impact that music has on our lives and the meaningful connections it brings. Harry Styles not only delivered an outstanding performance but also reminded us of the significance of finding people who allow you to be yourself. It was a night that broke down barriers, opened hearts, and created lasting memories.

This concert was a life-altering experience, driven by exceptional musical talent, captivating stage presence, and a genuine commitment to building a community. Styles' ability to deeply connect with his audience, fostered an atmosphere of inclusivity and acceptance, making the event a remarkable celebration of music and our shared humanity. It was an occasion where strangers quickly became friends, and fans collectively experienced the transformative power of music. As an artist who truly embodies his craft, Harry Styles continues to redefine the concert experience, leaving an unforgettable impact on the hearts of his fans.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at the Southwark Playhouse review: A masterclass in storytelling

If you're wanting to see arguably the most mesmerising production in London right now, then look no further than The Curious Case of Benjamin Button the musical at Southwark Playhouse. From the stunning writing to the exceptional performances, this production is a moving celebration of life and the boundless capacity to find joy in unexpected places.

The writing (book and lyrics by Jethro Compton and music and lyrics by Darren Clark) is nothing short of extraordinary. It beautifully captures the essence of F. Scott Fitzgerald's timeless story, seamlessly translating it into a theatrical masterpiece which sweeps you up and takes your heart on an incredible journey. The script is both poignant and thought-provoking, delving deep into the profound themes of aging, love, and the significance of every moment we encounter. The fast paced lyrics are witty and woven together so well. The musical tenderly tugs at the heartstrings, leaving the audience reflecting on their own lives and the choices that shape our existence.

One cannot help but be enthralled by this show which really is the whole package. Every single moment feels well thought out and you can't help but notice how much care has gone into creating this show. A very strong aspect of this musical is the attention to the sound and lighting which accompanies the story. Zoe Spurr's lighting design has whimsical elements and the interplay between light and shadow creates a really magical visual tapestry, accentuating the emotional depth of the narrative. Each scene is carefully crafted to transport the audience through the passage of time, immersing us in the ever-changing world of Benjamin Button. Luke Swaffield's sound design further enhances the atmosphere, adding depth and texture to the production, as well as being perfectly balanced so that the music packs a punch and hits you in the gut but doesn't come across too loud or over the top.

Cast wise, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button features universally delightful performances. Each member delivers stellar vocals, acting and music (each person plays various instruments throughout), bringing the characters to life with authenticity and charisma. Their vocal prowess and impeccable timing are truly commendable, adding another layer of brilliance to an already captivating production. The chemistry among the cast members is palpable, creating an enchanting dynamic that draws the audience deeper into the story.

It's hard to mention specific people because the cast are a constellation of stars but mention must go to Jamie Parker who is astounding as Benjamin Button. His performance is incredibly layered and transformative. It really is a masterclass in how physicality and subtle changes can completely make a performance. As his love interest, Molly Osbourne is glorious and also shows excellent growth and character development. Across the board the vocals are divine so hopefully a cast recording is on the way!

This is a perfectly wrapped show that delivers on every base. 

To sum it up, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button the musical at Southwark Playhouse is an absolute triumph. With its stunning writing, this production is a must-see for anyone who loves good storytelling. It's the sort of show you want to bottle up and bring out when you're feeling down. I wish I could see it again for the first time but I know that any subsequent visits will be just as endearing and wonderful. Don't miss your chance to embark on this enchanting journey of love, loss, and the beauty found in every moment of life.

Operation Mincemeat at the Fortune Theatre a review: The must see musical of 2023

If you're looking for a unique and intriguing musical, then look no further than Operation Mincemeat in its West End transfer to the Fortune Theatre. This production tells the incredible true story of a WWII deception operation, that although morally grey, helped Britain win the war and it does so with style, charm and heart in spades.

The star of this exciting musical is undoubtedly the music which manages to be both catchy and poignant, with some of the wittiest lyrics in the West End right now. The book, music and lyrics are expertly constructed by SpitLip founders David Cumming, Natasha Hodgson, Zoë Roberts and Felix Hagan (four of whom also star) and the whole show is maelstrom of musical magic. You'll find yourself continually laughing out loud and then all of a sudden wiping tears from your eyes as this hug of a musical manages to wrap you around its theatrical finger.

Every performance from the talented cast -completed at this performance by Claire Marie Hall, Jak Malone and Geri Allen (in her cover debut)- is a standout one. The precision with which they perform is just astounding and thanks to the script, there's a perfect balance between humour, satire and drama.

Aesthetically, Operation Mincemeat is a sleek mission. Ben Stones' set and costumes are perfectly evocative of MI5 and wartime London, as well as having a healthy dose of camp dramatics. One scene in particular features costumes perfect for a bedazzled version of Sweeney Todd! Really clever direction by Robert Hastie and joyous choreography by Jenny Arnold both let the story and performances to soar and ideally balance the line between allowing the performances to be genuinely funny without being cringe inducing. Shoutout must also go to Publicity Designer Bob King Creative for the genius artwork which accompanies the show. Once you see it, you won't un-see it!

In summary, this show is the epitome of fun. Poking fun at everyone and everything it is a satirical, stupendous, stomper of a show that will have you entertained and inspired. The new must-see musical, it needs to be booked immediately!

Pentatonix: The World Tour at the Eventim Apollo review: A shining celebration of musical talent

After having their concerts postponed in 2020, the Grammy Award winning group Pentatonix have finally made it to London with their world tour. Featuring the classics that made them popular such as Daft Punk and White Winter Hymnal, as well as soulful pieces from their most recent album, The Lucky Ones and some extra musical gems, the group proved that it was well worth the wait as they showcased their impressive range and versatility. As expected, their harmonies are spot-on and their ability to create complex sounds using only their voices continues to be astounding.

Having last seen them perform in 2016 what was immediately striking with this tour is just how amped up and emphasised the production value is; everything feels bolder and sleeker. This is in no small part thanks to the excellent lighting design by Damian Rogers which is so impeccably programmed to sync up with every beat and emotional inflection, it becomes a show all of its own. Equally the choreography perfectly complements each song and adds a real element of interest. The production team have done an incredible job of creating a concert experience that was not only musically impressive but also visually captivating.

What really makes the concert stand out is the energy and passion that Pentatonix bring to the procedings. The group have a palpable friendship and support network which shines from the stage and creates a really lovely atmosphere. Plus, they interact with the crowd, share stories and jokes, and make everyone feel like they are a part of the experience. It's clear that they genuinely love what they do and enjoy connecting with their fans.

Where before this could have been a 10/10 musical concert, now it’s a 10/10 musical spectacle. The bold elements don’t take away from the vocals, in fact they frame them perfectly and highlight just how tight and strong the vocal quintet are. It’s a matured and elevated experience and the talent and passion on stage make Pentatonix really shine. Hopefully it won't take seven years for the group to return to the UK because we need more!

Toby Sebastian at Omeara review: A stellar first headline show

Since originally releasing music in 2013, Toby Sebastian has been firmly carving his name in the music industry and this year has embarked on his first ever headline tour, which last night reached London's Omeara in a spectacular fashion.

A wonderful showcase of Toby's vocals and stellar song writing, the evening provided a mixture of fan favourite songs, as well as material from his upcoming album; all of which was received with warmth by the crowd who bopped along throughout. Also well received was a surprise appearance by Bridgerton star, Simone Ashley who got to showcase her hauntingly beautiful vocals in a duet of Rusty Snare. Fingers crossed we'll see the duo pair up again in future.

Striking throughout the evening was Sebastian's innate musicality which shone through as he poured his heart into the performance. His unique blend of indie and rock perfectly matches the raw, emotional sound of his voice, which particularly soars in his falsetto moments. These virtuosic sections were some of the best and most captivating of the set. In a bigger venue, with a slightly better sound system, one can only imagine how spectacular Toby would sound.

Equally, the evening had some really high octane moments, especially in the closing rendition of Train To Mexico which felt like a party and was certainly a fan fave. Sebastian really lets the music speak for itself and doesn't interact a huge amount with the audience which means sometimes there's a feeling of disconnect, however, his charisma still shines through and he really gives his all musically.

The three piece band work together like a well oiled machine and everyone seems like they're genuinely having fun on stage which is a real treat to see. 

Mention must also go to Louis Oliver who performed a super solid opening set and really charmed the audience through his raspy, incredibly powerful vocals. 

Overall a well-curated set list, and a solid and evident appreciation for music and performing made this a really special night. Whilst there's no release date yet for Toby's next album, the sneak peeks say it's going to be a really enjoyable listen; and the next tour which will hopefully accompany it will be so worth attending!

A hit on Broadway, Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, has finally opened in the West End and is a thoroughly entertaining, charismatic and soulful journey. The musical, with a book by Dominique Morisseau is a breathtaking celebration of the legendary Motown group, The Temptations, and their iconic music. Taking you on a journey through the highs and lows of stardom, it showcases how some of the most famous music was created and provides a really really fun night out.

The heart and soul of this musical are the performances which are unanimously nothing short of spectacular. The cast deliver powerhouse vocals that charm and mesmerise throughout and there are so many standout moments. The whole cast are spectacularly strong but mention must go to Cameron Bernard Jones, Tosh Wanogho-Maud, Ryan Carter and Michael James Stewart who really shine in their solo and ensemble moments. Each member who becomes part of The Temptations, does so with a real sense of nuance and the varying personalities and talents are showcased throughout; really capturing the essence and ethos of the original group.

Above all this is an ensemble piece, with some of the strongest moments coming when the cast unite both vocally and choreographically. Sergio Trujillo's choreography is some of the best in the West End right now, the sheer slickness and precision is a wonder to behold and the energy created on stage is supremely infectious. Featuring iconic hits like My Girl, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, and Ain't Too Proud to Beg, the show is a top-tapping fest of gusto and spirit.

The storytelling is mostly compelling, and the narrative (led by Sifiso Mazibuko) is engaging from the start. Spanning the long and tumultuous history of The Temptations, from their humble beginnings to their rise to stardom the show has a lot to fit in, and especially in the first act it feels a bit too much. Whilst every performance is engaging, it does feel a little too long and seems to keep going even when there's a natural break point. However, the story is a poignant and emotional one that delves into the personal struggles, triumphs, and dynamics of the group and includes some powerful messages. Alongside the musical elements, the show touches on themes of friendship and brotherhood, as well as shedding light on the social and political challenges faced by The Temptations and African American artists during that era. A poignant reminder of their impact on American music history and the enduring legacy they left behind, Ain't Too Proud is a strong celebration of The Temptations.

Ain't Too Proud is a wonderful addition to the West End that features dazzling production value, and timeless music. A celebration of The Temptations and their impact on Motown, it will leave you humming their hits long after the curtain falls.

For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy is powerful and thought-provoking production which offers a unique perspective on the challenges faced by young black men in today's society. The exceptionally strong play tackles heavy topics such as mental health, racism, and police profiling, all with a skilful blend of humour and heart that keeps the audience engaged from start to finish. For Black Boys... is a must see in its limited run.

The performances from the cast, made up of Mark Akintimehin, Emmanuel Akwafo, Nnabiko Ejimofor, Darragh Hand Aruna Jalloh and Kaine Lawrence are universally strong, with each actor bringing a unique and enticing angle to their role. Ryan Calais Cameron's writing is equally impressive, with sharp dialogue and powerful monologues that strike you whilst watching and also stay with you long after the play has ended. What's so effective is how the show flawlessly integrates spoken word, music, and dance to create an immersive and multifaceted experience. The whole thing is utterly seamless and flows with such a strong balance of urgency and intimacy.

The set design (Anna Reid) and lighting (Rory Beaton) add to the immersive experience, transporting the audience to the therapy room, without feeling basic; and the use of multimedia elements and striking choreography (Theophilus O. Bailey) add extra layers of depth to the production. As a whole it feels incredibly modern, relevant and powerful; a stunning representation of why new British Theatre is so necessary.

The show tackles important and sometimes taboo topics surrounding mental health, masculinity, and the experiences of young Black men and it's often incredibly moving; but what works so well is how these important social issues are balanced with humour and light. The authenticity which runs through the piece makes it feel so personal, and the audience really go through the journey with the performers.

For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy is a deeply moving and important work of art that, is a must-see for those interested in social justice, mental health, and ultimately, the power of storytelling. When the ensemble come together, they create some of the most powerful theatre seen in the West End in a long time.

A new, British musical, The Phase follows four best friends and bandmates, Aziza, Rowan, Sage and Ava as they take on their Catholic school's oppressive rules which restrict them from expressing their queerness. The coming-of age musical tackles a number of issues in a short time and is a well written exploration of teenage life and identity.

The Vault Festival is a great event for shows to form and find audiences but the space, budget and time constraints don't always allow for much development. The team behind The Phase have done a great job working with these limitations and have created a musical that feels pretty well rounded and has design interest as well as great performances. The set comprises of large drawn out items such as rulers and pens that are transformed into various other things, and the band dressed as crayons complete the pencil case assortment and give the show a unique look and feel.

Led by musical director Amy Hsu, the band do a great job of leading the piece and accompanying the cast who provide consistently strong vocals. With Jocasta Almgill as Aziza, Ashley Goh as Rowan, Holly Ryan as Sage and Gracie McGonigal as Ava, the quad create a wholesome group who really support one another and give each other room to grow and be who they want to be. All four have well defined characteristics, and in a different setting there would certainly be room to flesh them out further. The occasional mic issue did mean some moments were lost at this performance but this is something that can be easily ironed out.

The Phase is a show which knows its identity and retains it throughout. Every moment is cohesive and feels quite genuinely like a school drama. There is a lot of angst and a whole host of personal struggles from anxiety to friendship, and although at times it feels a little too much, there is a sincerity sewn through which makes it a lovely piece.

Zoe Morris and Meg McGrady have created a great piece of musical theatre, that under Izzy Rabey's direction really gets to soar. It's lovely to see queer stories told that are not surrounded by trauma, and this show does a great job at highlighting the joy and community found, even when individuals are struggling. From body dysmorphia to relationship boundaries, there is so much packed into the hour long show. At times it comes across a little too dramatic, but at the same time it is very evocative of school life.

Mention must also go to how accessible the team have made the show. With sensory items available as well as chill out spaces, the whole experience embodies inclusivity and is certainly paving the way for others.

The show has just finished its run at the the Vault Festival, but there's sure to be a future life for The Phase and it will continue to spread joy via a touching storyline and absolutely killer vocals.

First seen in the UK as a concert version and then subsequently a full production at the intimate Arts Theatre, Bonnie and Clyde has now upgraded to the larger Garrick Theatre as it continues its riotous reign.

After the show flopped on Broadway, it's nice to see that the creative team are taking risks and switching things up. In this new venue, there are clear changes and the larger space is used to create more drama and help the development of scenes. Paul Whitcomb's set has lots more going on, with everything feeling more developed and bolder than before. Zoe Spurr effectively lights the scenes,  creating some very effective moments during the various robberies and shoot outs. Nina Dunn's video design covers the set in historical photos as well as helping back up the on stage drama. These projections alongside the forceful tableau's created throughout, make the whole musical feel far more cinematic than its previous iteration.

In the titular roles as the West End's favourite felons, Frances Mayli McCann and Jordan Luke Gage excel. McCann really encapsulates the dreamer quality of Bonnie Parker as she is swept off her feet, whilst later on contrasting with a woman hardened by her life on the run. Vocally, her portrayal is dynamic and melancholy, with her rendition of Dyin' Ain't So Bad providing the perfect amount of emotional impact needed in the show. Gage is suitably menacing, whilst also bringing spades of charm to the role of Clyde Barrow and he performs the soaring score with seeming ease. The pair have excellent chemistry, often balancing one another well. This is a sultry, sexy show which leans heavily into the romance, and the duo do a really thrilling job at bringing their all encompassing passion to life; their fiery partnership ringing out until the very last shot.

In contrast to Clyde's intense hostility, Ted as a character is pretty underdeveloped but Cleve September performs the role with great intention and uses the material well; especially when he really lets his voice soar in act two. As Buck Barrow, George Maguire gives a very engaging performance and creates a dynamic partnership with newcomer to the cast, Jodie Steele, who's performance as Blanche is utterly brilliant. Full of humour and heart in equally wonderful measure, Steele's performance is a definite highlight. Dom Hartley Harris also joins the cast and gives a rousing performance as the Preacher; whilst Barney Wilkinson and Julie Yammanee have some real stand out moments in their tracks.

The story of Bonnie and Clyde's journey to being outlaws is a fascinating one, and Ivan Menchell's book begins to look deeper at their motives and aspirations and it's interesting to see how the pair took their desire for fame and turned it on its head. But perhaps more compelling is when their story is paralleled with the economic and emotional turmoil of America at the time. The Barrow brothers discuss how they've been profiled by police since they were young and there's some exploration on why people turned to crime, when their lives were torn apart by poverty. Made in America is one of the most striking numbers in the show and really brings another layer to proceedings but unfortunately it's not developed much further. Whilst the romance is the heart of the show, it would maybe be improved if there was more analysis of the socio-economic climate and its effects. This version of the show also cuts out a few of the scenes where the duo commit their crimes which hinders the development of Bonnie and Clyde as villains, meaning we don't see the full extent of their misdeeds and therefore the stakes never quite feel high enough.

The musical has its faults and the book could certainly use some editing but this still remains an incredibly enjoyable show that is feisty and thrilling. Don Black and Frank Wildhorn's pacy, engaging score is a treat to hear live. A law-breakingly good cast make Bonnie and Clyde a show that's well worth seeing and hearing.

Literally opening with a bang, The Bodyguard the Musical takes you on an exciting and exhilarating journey of glorious music and a sweet romance, which will have you engaged throughout.

Based on the 1992 movie of the same name, the show tells the story of a Secret Service bodyguard hired to protect a world famous singer/actress from a threatening stalker. When released the movie became one of the highest grossing of all time and this stage adaptation includes all the memorable moments as well as retaining the original 90s vibes which so many love.

The leading role of Rachel Marron was made famous by Whitney Houston and is a huge role to fill. Taking the cup and stepping into the glitzy boots for this production is Melody Thornton of The Pussycat Dolls. Melody absolutely nails the role and provides some killer vocals throughout, really coming into her own and becoming the star in act two. Thornton performs the iconic songs incredibly well, keeping close enough to the originals that the audience are satisfied but also putting her own small twist on them. 

As her love interest and bodyguard Frank Farmer, Ayden Callaghan is an imposing but charming character, easily gaining empathy from the audience through his serious and stern but sensitive portrayal. The chemistry between the pair is pretty strong with some touching moments, especially when the drama really amps up. They're sure to become even more comfortable with each other throughout the tour!

A stand out performance comes from Emily-Mae as Rachel's sister, Nicki. Not only does she portray her unrequited love and upset at constantly being overshadowed extremely well. But her vocal moments are some of the most memorable in the show.

Reneo Kusi-Appauh is equally delightful as Rachel's son Fletcher, especially during act two and the bows when he shows off some killer vocals. Definitely a performer to keep an eye on!

The second act is where things really get going, including the audience getting to see more of the ensemble who are absolutely fantastic. They don't get a massive amount of stage time but when they do, they are outstanding; full of energy they really elevate the show.

The set and costume design by Tim Hatley fit the vibe of the musical well and for a touring production are very effective but at times the space does feel underused and there could certainly be some more wow factor added throughout.

The overly dramatic sound effects and scene transformations are very telenovela/soap opera-esque and the intense thriller aspect doesn't quite transfer, but mostly the show is effective and is a faithful screen to stage adaptation.

The story is well paced and you can't help but revel in the brilliance of Whitney Houston's music from start to finish. The Bodyguard is a well performed show that works well on tour. Run To You-r closest touring venue to see this sparkling production for yourself.
