Music director Benjamin Rauhala’s love affair with the London theatre community and actors of the West End has been ongoing since his first sold-out concerts with Jeremy Jordan in the summer of 2016. Rauhala grew up obsessed with British pop music, including a subscription to Top of the Pops magazine! As a mainstay of the Broadway community, he has produced hundreds of sold-out concerts that spawned viral YouTube concert clips totalling * totalling over 56million views, including Jeremy Jordan’s ubiquitous cover of “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” and the many medleys featured in his Broadway Princess Party concert series.

Rauhala found that everyone he met in London had a favourite one of those videos and wanted to chat about it, so he had an idea: what if he gathered a dozen of his favourite West End performers with an epic band and re-created some of those beloved videos, as well as crafting some new arrangements for these amazing singers? On the heels of a sold-out run at Theatre Royal Drury Lane with Jeremy Jordan and in preparation to play the London Palladium with Ariana DeBose and for an upcoming international tour of Disney Princess The Concert, this was the perfect moment to create a concert unlike anything London has ever seen! BENJAMIN RAUHALA AND HIS WEST END BESTIES will be a night filled with Rauhala’s signature mashups and medleys, some of the best contemporary musical theatre, some radically rearranged Disney tunes, and, of course, tunes from the likes of Céline Dion, the Spice Girls, Selena Gomez, and Sam Smith!

He helped conceive and arrange the opening and closing numbers of the 2022 Tony Awards for Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose. Rauhala has toured the world since 2014 as the music director forJeremy Jordan, the Tony-nominated star of Broadway's Newsies and TV’s ‘Supergirl’, and in 2020, Rauhala was named 'Best Musical Director' at the Broadway World Cabaret Awards.

His Broadway credits include Fiddler on the RoofAmerican Psycho, and Pippin. His Off-Broadway credits include Hit List, the meta-musical from the NBC television show Smash, Duncan Sheik’s The Secret Life of Bees and David Byrne’s Joan of Arc: Into The Fire. He is also the music director for Academy Award Winner Ariana DeBose, Halston star Krysta Rodriguez, Tony Award nominees Derek Klena, Jennifer Damiano, Kathryn Gallagher, and Disney legend Jodi Benson, as well as Nashville star Kyle Dean Massey, Anastasia star Christy Altomare, Smash star Andy Mientus, Moulin Rouge star Ashley Loren, and Frozen stars Caroline Bowman and Austin Colby.

Rauhala co-founded the Write Out Loud songwriting competition with Mean Girls Tony Award nominee Taylor Louderman, which is currently in its fourth season of supporting the next generation of composers. Additionally, he is an Original Programming Producer at 54 Below, where he has created hundreds of sold-out concerts, including the Broadway Loves Series, that has famously honored Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, Sam Smith, Demi Lovato, and many more beloved pop icons.

Review: Shucked at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre: A Theatrical Kernel of Joy

Shucked
Regent's Park Open Air Theatre

There’s a whole lot to shuckin’ love about Shucked, now lighting up the stage at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. In a world that too often feels dark, this radiant, knee-slappin’, corn-fed musical comedy offers a buttery escape- warm, golden, and just the right amount of corny. Under the ever-imaginative direction of Jack O’Brien, this UK premiere pops with joy, brilliant choreography, and heartfelt hilarity that leaves you grinning from corn ear to corn ear.

Originally grown on Broadway, Shucked is a musical that never takes itself too seriously, and that’s its biggest strength. The show, with book by Tony winner Robert Horn and music and lyrics by the Grammy-winning country duo Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, is a jubilant celebration of community, connection, and corn. Yes- corn. And trust us, you’ll never look at maize the same way again.

Choreograper Sarah O’Gleby, brings her trademark flair for physical comedy and visual storytelling. From toe-tapping hoedowns to sly little winks in the movement, his direction ensures the action never goes stale. Every beat feels fresh and full of flavour. The choreography is sharp and satirical, leaning into the show’s knowingly silly tone without letting it tip into parody. It’s a-maize-ing how balanced the humour is.

The open-air setting is the perfect patch for this rural romp. Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has always been a magical venue, but here, with Japhy Weideman’s sunshine-drenched lighting design and Scott Pask’s witty, vibrant set, it becomes a heartland paradise. There’s real theatrical alchemy in watching a musical about growing things, bloom under actual summer skies.

The cast are ear-resistible. Sophie McShera leads with pluck and power as Maizy, delivering powerhouse vocals with a wink of mischief. Ben Joyce is gloriously goofy as Beau, while Monique Ashe-Palmer and Steven Webb- playing the narrators- steal scenes with quick-fire delivery and impeccable comic timing. Their banter snaps, crackles, and pops. Georgina Onuorah shines as Lulu, delivering a performance that’s as crisp and charismatic as fresh-popped corn- her powerhouse vocals and razor-sharp comic timing make her an undeniable stand-out amongst a stellar cast.

Musically, the score is an earworm-stuffed delight. The blend of bluegrass, country, and pop feels authentic and catchy, with standout numbers like 'Independently Owned' getting well-deserved rounds of applause. The band, brings an infectious energy to the whole affair.

What makes Shucked more than just a corny joke-fest is its kernel of sincerity. Amid the pun-filled gags and outrageous plot twists, there's a surprisingly poignant message about the power of community and listening- especially when the world feels like it’s cracking at the seams.

Yes, some of the jokes may make you groan before you giggle, and yes, the plot is bonkers. But that’s the whole point of it. This is a show that dares to be joyful- and in these sometimes difficult times, that’s something worth celebrating.

So grab your friends, head to Regent’s Park, and let Shucked butter you up. It might not change the world, but for a couple of hours, it sure makes it feel a whole lot brighter.

Benidorm Live (UK Tour), New Wimbledon Theatre | Review

Benidorm Live (UK Tour)
New Wimbledon Theatre
Reviewed on Monday 11th March 2019 by Olivia Mitchell
★★★★

Camp, crude and cheesy, Benidorm Live has brought the popular TV programme to life in a fantastic way. Derren Litten's stage adaptation completely captures the feel-good essence of the programme and has the audience laughing out loud throughout.

Almost taking the form of an episode from the TV, Benidorm Live follows the staff and holidaymakers at the tattered and tacky beyond belief, Solana Resort in Benidorm. Famous faces from the series Liam (Adam Gillen), Mateo (Jake Canuso), Joyce (Sherrie Hewson), Kenneth (Tony Maudsley), Jacqueline (Janine Duvitski) and Sam (Shelley Longworth), fight to reveal and impress the undercover hotel inspectors who could lead to the shut down of the resort. The story is basic but extremely well put across; what the narrative lacks, is made up for with performance and wit.

Mark Walters' cleverly designed set, brings the hotel to life with cheer and brightness, featuring a pool side, Neptune's Bar, the hotel reception and the Blow'N'Go salon. The transitions from scene to scene are well done, especially when mini dance interludes draw the audience away from the set changes completely. By the end of the show, you almost forget you're not watching the TV, or even that you're not sitting on a Benidorm beach yourself.

Whilst the hugely enjoyable design of the show is great, it's the utterly hilarious cast who really bring it to life. Sherrie Hewson prances about barking orders to no avail. As the sleazy but adored Mateo,  Jake Canuso is outstanding and he tries (and fails) to seduce the hotel's guests. Particularly impressive is the link to Canuso's past, where he shows off some of his sharp, supported dance.  Janine Duvitski gives one of the wittiest, most innuendo rife performances ever. Her play on words and general larger than life persona, makes her a definite audience favourite, gaining laugh after laugh. Adam Gillen's Liam is endearing and wonderful, as is his partner in crime, Kenneth, played as camply as possible by Tony MaudsleyAsa Elliot as himself, provides some great vocals.  As the middle-class holidaymakers who find themselves at the Solana when their dream hotel is overbooked, Tricia Adele-Turner and Bradley Clarkson give buoyant performances as Sophie and Ben.

Derren Litten's stage debut should be applauded as he creates a rowdy night out that is easy to follow but still highly entertaining. A saucy, seaside postcard of a show, Benidorm Live is sure to delight fans of the series and newbies alike as they take a carefree, innuendo-filled trip to sunny Spain.

Benidorm Live is at the New Wimbledon Theatre until March 16th before continuing its tour.

Benidorm Live (UK Tour), Bristol Hippodrome | Review

Benidorm (UK Tour)
Bristol Hippodrome

Reviewed on Monday 19th November 2018 by Emma Gradwell
★★★★

After ten years on our television screens, the long running sitcom Benidorm has found a new home on stage as a national touring production. Written by Derren Litten, the result is a mix of familiar storylines and musical interludes which give us two hours of uncomplicated silliness. The show is largely driven by double entendres and the saucy seaside humour you will have come to expect.

The show is led by six familiar actors from the television cast and the audience were very pleased to see them, with huge cheers to be heard as they appeared on stage for the first time. The storyline works for both fans of the original show and new audiences.

Two middle class holidaymakers, Sophie and Ben (played by Tricia Adele-Turner and Bradley Clarkson), find themselves at the 3½ star all-inclusive hotel, The Solana, when their original hotel is overbooked – and they are not impressed. Bribery and seduction are the obvious answer when Hotel Manager Joyce Temple-Savage (Sherrie Hewson) decides they must be undercover hotel inspectors tasked with shutting them down.

Jacqueline (Janine Duvitski), a member of the Swingers Association, and her very open-minded friend, ‘Gay Derek’ (Damian Williams), baffle the newcomers with their friendly charms. Duvitski is a master comedienne – and Jacqueline’s rendition of “Rubber Ball” at Karaoke Night is one of the shows highlights. There were even a few nods to Jacqueline’s late husband, Donald, and his penchant for their alternative lifestyle, which fortunately for us, Jacqueline is still thoroughly enjoying as a singleton.

Adam Gillen’s Liam is as quirky and naïve as he is on screen, and his continued devotion to his absent father, Leslie, and his Solana family are charming. Tony Maudsley as Kenneth, owner of the on-site hair and beauty salon, ‘Blow and Go’, gives a slick comedic performance. His naughty slogan t-shirts are in full force, my favourite being ‘Mince, Wince, Repeat’.

Stellar dance moves are provided by Jake Canuso (a former dancer) as barman and lothario, Mateo, and new staff member, Ricky (Will Jennings). Shelley Longworth as Travel Rep, Sam provides cabaret at Neptune’s Nightclub alongside Neptune’s own crooner, Asa Elliott, belting out some favourite holiday tunes. What was lacking was a live band, which for a production of this size was disappointing.

The clever set design by Mark Walters took us from reception to poolside via the Salon and eventually to Neptune’s Nightclub for the second half. Director Ed Curtis pulls it all together seamlessly and at two hours, five minutes it doesn’t outstay its welcome.

Benidorm Live is cheesy, camp and refreshingly unpolitical, and I came away still chuckling about Jacqueline’s pink pussy and the sausage in cider.

Benidorm Live runs at the Bristol Hippodrome until  24th November, before continuing its tour.
