A Magical Milestone for the Beloved West End Musical
The West End musical phenomenon Wicked has achieved another remarkable milestone in London theatre history. The spellbinding show, which tells the untold story of the Witches of Oz, has become the ninth longest-running production in West End history.
Following Saturday’s matinee performance, Wicked also surpassed the record held by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express, becoming the longest-running production ever staged at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. This new record was celebrated with a commemorative plaque, presented to representatives from ATG Entertainment and the cast of Wicked, now proudly displayed both backstage and in the theatre’s Ambassador Lounges.
Producer David Stone said:
“We are thrilled that Wicked has become the ninth longest-running production in West End history and the longest-running production in the history of the Apollo Victoria Theatre, surpassing Starlight Express. This milestone is a testament to the extraordinary talent and dedication of the many performers, musicians, backstage teams and theatre staff who have sustained the production with such care and commitment. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the millions of audience members whose continued enthusiasm and support have made this remarkable achievement possible.”
ATG Entertainment’s Chief Content Officer, Michael Lynas, added:
“As the owners of the Apollo Victoria Theatre, we are immensely proud that Wicked has become the venue’s longest-running show. This remarkable musical is a jewel in the crown of the West End and shines as brightly as when it opened more than 19 years ago.”
Since opening in 2006, Wicked has been a cornerstone of London’s musical theatre scene, captivating audiences with Stephen Schwartz’s unforgettable score and dazzling production design. Nearly two decades later, the story of friendship, destiny, and defying expectations continues to inspire theatregoers from around the world.
With Wicked still performing to packed audiences, its place among the greatest West End musicals of all time is now secured and its magic shows no sign of fading.
