The iconic story of courage, balance, and friendship is stepping into the spotlight as The Karate Kid- The Musical makes its UK premiere in 2026. Producers Naoya Kinoshita, Kumiko Yoshii, John Gore, and Kenny Wax have announced a major UK tour that will launch next spring before heading to the West End and eventually Broadway.
Adapted by Robert Mark Kamen, the original screenwriter of the 1984 hit film, this stage musical promises to capture the heart and spirit of a story that has inspired generations. With an original score by Drew Gasparini, The Karate Kid- The Musical opens at the New Wimbledon Theatre on 28 April 2026 before visiting Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Oxford, Milton Keynes, Glasgow, Sheffield, Sunderland, Birmingham, and Cardiff through to 1 August 2026.
Beloved by fans worldwide, the original film starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita became a cultural milestone, earning Morita an Academy Award nomination and launching a global franchise that continues to thrive through the Netflix series Cobra Kai and the recent film Karate Kid: Legends.
On stage, the musical reimagines Daniel LaRusso’s coming-of-age journey through dynamic movement, powerful music, and emotional storytelling. At its core is the mentorship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi, a bond that teaches audiences that karate is not about fighting, but about dignity, self-control, and respect.
Directed by Amon Miyamoto and choreographed by Keone and Mari Madrid, the show features scenic design by Derek McLane and costume design by Ayako Maeda. The Tony Award-winning creative team aims to transform cinematic nostalgia into a fresh, kinetic theatre experience that celebrates mentorship, resilience, and the timeless lesson to “wax on, wax off.”
